HISTORY
Founded in 1880 by Joseph Humphris, who started
the business from his front room at 74 Broughton Road, working as
a carpenter, joiner and undertaker, then moving to Queens Road,
to a proper workshop.
In 1913 Harold, Joseph's eighth son, took over the business
after his father had an accident which left him disabled. After
the First World War, Harold moved to the present location in Albert
Street which had previously been used as a brewery. The buildings
were adapted and added to as the business expanded.
In the 1950's Harold was joined by his sons John and
Maurice. Harold died in 1966 since when the premises have been modernised
and improved on a number of occasions. Much work was done in the
late 1980's and 1990's, and continues to the present day as the funeral business continues to grow.
Today this includes a service chapel, chapels of rest, private interview
rooms, a letter cutter's workshop, a memorial showroom and extensive
car parking. In 1981 Maurice's son, Martin joined the business,
as did John's son Christopher in 1985.
With over 125 years of service behind the firm, Christopher and Martin
look forward to the future with confidence.
